Thcolumns: Here comes the rain

As I type this, outside my window is the deluge. In, oh, five minutes, the sky went from bright to pouring and now the News's parking lot has a 10-foot wide river down the center.

Rain comes in so many personalities:

Amazon rain that hardly ever lets up.

Death Valley rain that shows only every-so-once-in-a-while.

Hawaii rain that runs on a daily schedule.

Florida rain that has fits of violent enthusiasm.

Korea rain that is can-do part of the year and not-sure the rest.

London rain that is always around but to no apparent purpose.

D.C. rain that slowly gnaws away the Jefferson Memorial.

And Tehachapi rain that still hasn't made up its mind.

But no matter its style, rain is important. If water stopped falling from the sky, it would stop falling from our taps as well.

Leadership is much the same way. Local anarchists are, of course, encouraged to write in and disagree, but no matter their style, we need leaders.

I was happy to see so many rabid people during the last presidential contest because we should be passionate about our leadership.

But I think too often we don't consider what sort of leaders we need at the local level.

Do we want an Amazon or a Death Valley as mayor? Hawaiis or Floridas on our CSD boards? Have we considered how our local government should be run?

Does it matter?

The rain outside my window is still pattering away but the river is just a moving puddle. Clouds hang low over the valley.

Was this the rain that Greater Tehachapi needed? Does it represent the leadership we should be voting for?

I don't know. But right now, as I look out the window, the air is clear.
